March 3 - 5,
2012
~ Guest Turner: Ashley Harwood
Ashley is from Charleston, South
Carolina where she teaches and shows her work weekly at the
Charleston Farmer’s Market. She has studied and worked
extensively with Stuart Batty. She has been selected to
demonstrate at this year’s AAW symposium in San Jose and at
the Irish Woodturner’s Guild Symposium in 2012. She
recently returned from Ireland where she demonstrated with
Glen Lucas. Her teaching methods strongly emphasize tool
control, technique, and sharp tools.
Saturday, March 3 ~ Demonstration
For the demonstration, Ashley will
turn a thin walled bowl showing and using the push cut; then
she will show rim and foot embellishment. She will also
show her fine spindle turning technique making one of her
signature urchin ornaments.
The demo will start at 9 AM at the GWCA
Turning Center. The cost is $25. We can arrange to bring
in lunches on Saturday.
Sunday, March 4 and
Monday, March 5 ~ Hands-on Classes
For classes, Ashley will have one day on
bowls and the other on spindle turning. The classes will
focus on the fundamental cuts (that make up every shape in
woodturning), tool control, and sharpening. The spindle
class will be great for the newer to intermediate level
turner, although for the more experienced turner Ashley
assures me they will be challenged as well. The bowl class
should be good for the more experienced turner.
The Sunday class will focus on spindle
turning. For the spindle class, you will be using a
roughing gouge, a spindle gouge, a half inch bowl gouge, and
a parting tool. If you have a vortex tool, you might want
to bring it as well. Class cost is $125 for club members.
All participants will need appropriate safety equipment.
The Monday’s class will focus on bowls.
For the bowl turning class, you will need a bowl gouge,
bottom bowl gouge, bedan, and negative rake scrapers.
Class cost is $125 for club members. All participants will
need appropriate safety equipment.
There are no space
restrictions for the demo, however, space is limited for
both hands-on sessions. If you are interested, Contact Bill Lewis
as soon as possible for information or to reserve your spot: 281-392-0607
or wwl@wwl-associates.com
