August's Learning Experience: Hollowing Tool Rodeo with Steve LeGrue

Steve LeGrue, club president talked about and demonstrated many of the
tools and equipment options used in hollowing. |

Steve talked about tool selection.... |

...then demonstrated their use. |

Much of the discussion centered around torque-arresting systems
and laser guidance options. |

Steve also demonstrated an "elbow" hollowing system. |
|
|

There's always good interest in Steve's demos. |
 |

Another view of participants at August's
meeting |
|

Ed Peine demonstrated his Oneway hollowing system... |

...and someone in the audience handed him this "Tool
Envy" sign--be sure to enlarge the thumbnail and read the sign! |

Gerogene Huckeba watches Don Fluker use his embow
hollowing system. |

The great thing about GCWA demos is that everyone
gets a chance to try new ideas out.
|

Here's Fog Tanner trying
Don's system. |
|
Faces in the Crowd

Bill Berry leads a discussion about all things
woodturning. |

Tom Enloe has the club's lending library down to a
science! |

Steve LeGrue and Dale Barrack have a private word
before the meeting gets underway. |

George Kabacinski, Dennis April, Andy Chen and
Clyde Collier. |

More woodturning talk! (You were expecting the to
be discussing the weather?!) |

Bill Berry and Dennis April discuss Dennis' winning entry in the
Intermediate Category. |

Bill and Dave Barziza with Dave's First Place Advanced
Category Mesquite Bowl. |

Clyde Collier with Bill and Clyde's Second Place Segmented award
winning closed form. |

Bill with Andy Chen. For those of you who aren't aware of
it, Andy is one of the country's leading experts on turning
segmented Corian. |

Dennis Ford with Bill discussing Dennis' Elm Burl Box. |
Other Worthy Entries
|
Take a closer look at the item
immediately above. It didn't win an award, in fact, it
wasn't even entered into the competition. It's a piece by Jerry
Bennett, one of the nation's premier segmented sculpture turners.
Jerry often doesn't enter his work in Show & Tell just to give other
members a chance to win ribbons. What a guy! |
