Steve LeGrue's Presentation on "Tool Steels Used in Woodturning--Which is Right for You?"

Steve LeGrue, club president, discussed the types of steels used in woodturning at July's meeting.

The presentation was extremely thorough and detailed.

Steve's focus was on helping members select the right tools, which requires and understanding of the metals used, the advantages/disadvantages and their costs.

He discussed carbon steel, high speed steels, and particle metal steel. A key point was that if you sharpen before the final cut, the advantages of more complex steel is lost.

Faces in the Crowd

July's meeting was held at the First Presbyterian Church of Houston. In exchange for the use of their beautiful facilities. GCWA members donated several turned items to the church for its use.  See the items, below.

An old face showed up at July's meeting--Bobby Bridges (at right).  Bobby was at one time the president of GCWA.

A popular activity at GCWA meetings--coffee and conversation.  It doesn't get much better than this!

Georgene Huckeba talks with new member Steve Willis.

Georgene got all tuckered out after that conversation and had to take a rest!

Chuck Johnson shared some observations about his second place Intermediate Category winner.

Jon Gaynor was pleased to be recognized with a first place in the Intermediate Category for his Pecan Box.

Jerry Collins has been on a roll lately--he's earned awards for several months in a row.  .

Bill Pottorf displays his award winning box.

Paula Haymond took first place in the Enhanced Category with this beautiful pierced and dyed plate.
