October's Demonstration: Christmas Ornament by Don Fluker

Don Fluker loves to make Christmas ornaments and at October's meeting, he shared his technique for making a hollow form and finial type ornament.

Don began with a non-descript piece of wood and demonstrated the steps involved and the tools he uses to make an ornament.

A good crowd was on hand at the University of Houston's Keeland Center for the demo.

Don has an easy going style which makes his demonstrations fun to watch an learn from.

We were a bit surprised that Don didn't wear his Christmas Elf hat this year!.

Don paused frequently to ensure everyone understood the steps involved in creating this type of ornament.

He also took breaks in turning to clear out the shavings...A-A-C-H-O-O!.

Here are some finished ornaments along with an unfinished finial.  To see additional ornaments made by Don, visit his Gold Gallery here.

Faces in the Crowd

GCWA meetings are not only a chance to share one's latest turnings, they are also great opportunities to renew and establish friendships. Here Jim Keller and Dave Barziza do both.

GCWA's membership extends all the way to Colorodo where Kevin Turco lives.  He was back in Texas for a visit (and to eat donuts!)

Two of the club's master turners, Jerry Bennett and Ed Peine discuss all things woodturning (of course).

Jeff Marks checks out one of the items on the Show & Tell table.

Georgene Huckeba and club sage, Luna Ford, inspect a Show & Tell item.

Rick Taylor and friend, Diane Oates, talk with Kendall Westbrook.

Scott Njaa looks at one of the items on the Non-Judging table.

Where ever Bill Berry is, a crowd usually gathers!  Here Reggie Keith and Marty Kaminsky chew the fat with Bill.

Whatever the item was, it sure attracted interest!.

Ah, that's what it was--a hollowing tool set up.  Dave Greenawalt seems really tickled about it!

Don Smith and Greg Gonsalves.

Gary Rock, Jon Gaynor and Bill Pottorf examine a piece on the Enhanced Table.

John Van Domelen and Ed Peine admire a piece...which turned out to be one that Ed and Greg Gonsalves created..

The piece that Bill Metzler is examining garnered a lot of attention--it also won an award!

Here's another piece that was also created by burning the exterior with a pattern-shaped tool.

Ric Taylor and Diane Oates.

Bill Metzger checks out a turning video from Tom Enloe the club Librarian.

Paul Millo, seen here inspecting one of the Show & Tell items, is the club's chief gallery photographer and does a great job at it!

Another crows shot of the demo.

Last, but not least, our current club president, Steve LeGrue.
