Demonstration: Coring Techniques and Equipment by John King
and Bill Pottorf

Bill explained his McNaughton system, which he's had for about 10 years. |

He has a basic set. McNaughton has since developed
a set of smaller cutting blades. |

Members thoroughly enjoyed the presentation and
requested that an actual coring demonstration be added to the
program calendar for a future meeting. |

Bill also explained the torque-arrester of the McNaughton
system... |

...and emphasized the importance of keeping the handle raised
during the coring.
You can get additional information about the McNaughton coring
system at:
www.kelton.co.nz |
|

Shown here is the current cutting tip of the McNaughton system.
According to Bill, this tip cuts more efficiently than the original tip
shown in the next picture. |

This is the original cutting tip of the McNaughton system.
If you have an older McNaughton system with this type of tip, Bill
suggests you regrind it to the shape shown in the previous picture. |

An example of a cored set of bowls, this set with
added rim segmentation. |

Another set of cored bowls. |

And another. There is another (finished) cored set by Bill
Pottorf in the "Other Worthy Items" section, above. |

Members gathered around the Non-Judged table
to check out By Reed's large vase . . . or is it a king sized Brandy
Sniffer? |

During the Show & Tell
critique, judge Greg Gonsalves asked By for more information about his
piece. |

By, not being the bashful type,
obliged Greg. |

It seemed that Andy
Chen enjoyed By's comments. |

So did everyone else! |

There's always a line to check out or
return videos from GCWA's Lending Library, managed by Tom Enloe. |

GCWA is one of the few AAW clubs that awards ribbons for
Show & Tell entries. Here judge Bill Berry gives an item a close
inspection to ensure that it meets stringent technique and design
criteria. |

Chris Hendrix discussed ths first place
Intermediate Category red oak bowl that judge Bill Berry is
holding. |

Bill Berry (r) explains what led he and fellow judge Greg
Gonsalves to award a ribbon to Dale Barrack's (l) pecan bowl. |

Ric Taylor (r) told members how he made his
sphere and stand, which was awarded a ribbon in the Advanced
Cagegory.. |

By Reed (l) talked about his first
place entry in the Advanced Category.. |

Although the piece did not win a ribbon, Bill Berry
singled out Gene Volentine's well crafted bowl for discussion. |

Gary Rock (r) took home two ribbons in the
Enhanced/Segmented Category. The third place piece is displayed
here by Bill Berry. |

Clyce Collier was accorded second place in the
Enhanced/Segmented Category for this stave-constructed vase. |

And Delia Spicer, who also does an excellent job
running each month's raffle, also did an excellent job making
this pen, which took the second place ribbon in the Kit
Category. |
