    2017 December Club Meeting

    9:00 AM-12:00 PM
    12-16-17
    Trini Mendenhall Community Center
1414 Wirt Rd, Houston, TX 77055, USA

At the club meeting in December, John Chatelain will be showing us how he turns his Rattlesnake Whistle.

We will also do our annual Ornament Exchange.  Please bring one or more of your turned ornaments to change with your fellow turners.  A few key rules to keep in mind:

    • ONLY Jonathan Bartz should put on or remove an ornament from the Christmas tree – this is a precaution to ensure the safety of the ornaments from accidental damage.  Please honor this restriction.
    • You can bring multiple ornaments to exchange, but everybody will get to pick an ornament in round 1, before we move on to round 2+ for those who brought multiple.
    • Your name should visible be on the ornament somewhere.
    • You will get a number for each ornament you turn in.  Numbers will then be randomly drawn from a bag to pick the order of selection.  When your number is called, come up and pick out an ornament (remember to let Jonathan remove it from the tree for you).

This February, our club meeting will feature Paul Judkins, owner of Chucks+, demonstrating how to properly disassemble, clean, and reassemble a scroll chuck for routine maintenance, to improve overall operations and safety.  This is a task many are intimidated to try, and Paul will help demystify the process.

    2018 Annual Retreat

    6:00 PM-3:00 PM
    03-09-18-03-11-18
    Montgomery County Fairgrounds
Carl Pickering Memorial Dr, Conroe, TX 77303, USA

This year the annual retreat is being held earlier than normal, so please mark your calendars so you don’t end up with a scheduling conflict!

We are always looking for volunteers, to teach, to setup, to coordinate, so please be generous with your time.  This event doesn’t happen by accident, and it doesn’t happen without an army of volunteers participating.  If you haven’t volunteered lately, is it your turn to volunteer this time?  Contact Don Fluker for details.

    More information to come…

Upcoming Hands On Workshop (HOW) Classes

GCWA provides one of the best series of hands-on woodturning classes of any club in the nation.  These classes are provided as a benefit to club members only, and have a very nominal fee to simply cover costs.  Starting in 2017, HOW class fees for standard classes will be $45 per day.

Instructors can range from club members to regional and national turners that the club brings has brought in for club demonstrations as well.  Many classes are still in the planning stages for 2017, and an updated Events List of HOW classes will be published as these dates become available.

See below for registration information.

Note:  If a class is full and you want into that class please sign up to be on the wait list.  There are often times when folks on the wait list get into a class that was full when they attempted to register.

Scott Haddix - Turned Stem Wine Glass (Postponed)

    All day
    01-27-18

Scott’s house flooded during Hurricane Harvey, and this will necessitate rescheduling this class for a later time.  We will work to reschedule this as soon as possible.

    ———————–

This will be a hands-on class to do the project that Scott demonstrated previously, for replacing a glass stem with a wooden stem on a wine glass.

Please note: Meeting dates and locations are subject to change.
