    May 2017 Annual Spring Retreat

Carl Pickering Memorial Dr, Conroe, TX 77303, USA

This year we are celebrating the 20th Annual Spring Retreat, and it is an event not to be missed.

We have finalized the class schedule, and registrations are now open.  This year will include classes at all levels, as well as various demonstrations, enough for everyone to find a topic of interest.

Additionally, for the first time, we are adding a few class options for Friday night as well for those who might be able to join in.  This is a trial run, and we’ll evaluate the success of the Friday night classes to determine if we try this again next year.

This entire event happens because of a dedicated team of GCWA volunteers, so if you’ve not yet found your place as a volunteer, reach out to Greg Gonsalves, who is leading this year’s retreat, for help in getting you tied in and involved.

    May 2017 Club Meeting

    8:00 AM-12:00 PM
    05-20-17
    Trini Mendenhall Community Center
1414 Wirt Rd, Houston, TX 77055, USA

No, this is not a mistake, we ARE having a May club meeting this year, in addition to our May Retreat.

Who is the presenter at the May 20th general meeting – YOU!   It’s the long-awaited Jigs & Fixtures meeting.  So walk around the shop / studio / garage and select a few of your favorite woodturning related jigs and fixtures and bring them to the May meeting.

Our most recent Luna Ford Award winner, Walter Mooney, has graciously agreed to moderate the presentation and discussion of the various jigs and fixtures that show up for this extremely informative session.  Each person bringing a jig or fixture to the meeting will be given an opportunity to tell the group what it is, how it works, and how it improves their woodturning experience.

If you’re new to the club or just haven’t experienced a Jigs & Fixtures meeting, you should be there.  The opportunity to pick up new ideas is fantastic and the innovation and ingenuity of our members shines at this meeting.

If you’re one who is a bit shy or don’t think your device is all that unusual please do bring it anyway.  It is truly amazing what we can all learn from the simplest concepts.  You could save someone else a lot of frustration and make their turning a lot more fun by sharing what you know and how you have solved problems and have made improvements in your turning environment.

Upcoming Hands On Workshop (HOW) Classes

GCWA provides one of the best series of hands-on woodturning classes of any club in the nation.  These classes are provided as a benefit to club members only, and have a very nominal fee to simply cover costs.  Starting in 2017, HOW class fees for standard classes will be $45 per day.

Instructors can range from club members to regional and national turners that the club brings has brought in for club demonstrations as well.  Many classes are still in the planning stages for 2017, and an updated Events List of HOW classes will be published as these dates become available.

See below for registration information.

Note:  If a class is full and you want into that class please sign up to be on the wait list.  There are often times when folks on the wait list get into a class that was full when they attempted to register.
