Kirk DeHeer has been a professional woodturner and long-time instructor at Craft Supplies’ Dale Nish School for Turning for many years. He has held leadership positions in local turning clubs and is on the Utah Woodturning Symposium Board of Directors.

Kirk is known for his craftsmanship and understanding of sharpening techniques. He has an extensive knowledge of woodturning tools, equipment and turning techniques. He has demonstrated and led classes at clubs throughout the country.Kirk is a popular demonstrator at many woodturning symposiums and at the Woodworking Shows throughout the country.

Drawing on his studies with some of the best woodturners in the world, Kirk has developed his own style of instruction and turning that will enhance any woodworker’s ability level. He enjoys teaching others solid foundational techniques and skills that aid in expanding the creativity and artistic abilities of his student.

Additionally, Kirk is considered one of the best woodturning tool sharpeners around. He has written articles on sharpening woodturning tools and has produced a DVD, Sharpening Demystified. Kirk has also developed a variety of specialized finishes and surface enhancement products for woodturning.

As per our normal procedures with national turners, this will be an extended meeting, and we will not have a Raffle or Show-And-Tell in August to allow more time for Kirk.

    This March, GCWA welcomes the return of Kai Muenzer to Houston.  You will not want to miss this meeting, as Kai does some of the most interesting projects you'll run across, often requiring one or more specialty jigs to accomplisy.

    We are still working with Kai to determine which of his many unique projects he will be demonstrating for our benefit, so watch this space for more detail.

    This April, GCWA welcomes special demonstrator Sally Ault to Houston for a Demo Day.  Sally has a diverse turning repertoire. She has demonstrated and taught at many prime events and locations.

    Sally will also be teaching two days of classes while she is in town. The topics are being worked out so if you have specific requests please pass them along to our HOW coordinator, George.

    Ms Ault was born and raised in San Diego, California and graduated with a BA degree in Art with a Crafts emphasis from San Diego State. Her work there was focused on weaving, jewelry design and ceramics. During a furniture class, she discovered woodturning. After a break of a number of years, she resumed woodturning in 2004.

    Sally mentions “I enjoy all types of wood turning but currently my focus is on lidded containers including the sea Urchin series, open bowls, embellished pieces and jewelry.”

    Ms. Ault’s work is shown in the Dunn Gallery in Kapaau, Hawaii, the Real Mother Goose in Portland, Oregon, the gift shop at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colorado, at the A Store in Albuquerque, New Mexico and in the gallery at Studio 38 in Spanish Village Art Center in Balboa Park, San Diego.

    Sally has won numerous awards and prizes for her work. She has demonstrated at the Utah Woodturning Symposium, the AAW Symposium, SouthWast Association of Turners (SWAT) as well as many clubs and public events across the country. Ms. Ault has completed an Artist in Residency program at Anderson Ranch Arts Center and teaches at Arrowmont Center for Crafts.

    We will follow our Demo Day format for this meeting, so anticipate an early start, a quick break for lunch, a mid-afternoon finish, no Show-and-Tell and no Raffle, BUT WE WILL BE COLLECTING EMPTY BOWLS!!!!
