Luna Ford Obituary

Luna Ray Ford Long time member of Gulf Coast Woodturners Association passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2017 at the age of 85.  Luna has been a friend and mentor for many of us, and will be missed.

In the early years of GCWA, when we had meetings at members shops, the December meeting was always held at Luna’s shop in Deer Park.  His wife prepared lots of homemade goodies, and made the December meeting really special.  Luna’s lathe of choice was a Delta DL40, and it was one of the best that Delta made, at that time.  His turning tools were not elaborate, many of which he made himself, but in his hands and with his skills, they could turn a piece of wood from the street into a masterpiece.

You will not see an article in the AAW Journal by Luna Ford, or you won’t see a woodturning video by Luna Ford, but from those of us who were privileged to learn from him, we learned volumes.  Luna would not hesitate to tell anyone, and I mean anyone, “I guess you know you are doing that wrong” or “You know you are cutting against the grain”.  If Luna were watching you turn something, and he said, “Let me show you how to make that cut”, you may… or may not, get the tool back. Luna knew how to make a “proper cut” and his ultimate goal was to teach you how also.  I for one was privileged to spend many hours with Luna. Our own Luna Ford Award, is awarded each year to a member who has gone above and beyond to promote woodturning and our organization.

Luna was a demonstrator at the first Texas Turn or Two, now known as South West Association of Turners (SWAT).  He enjoyed the woodturning community, be it the: AAW Symposium, SWAT, our Retreat, GCWA meetings, or impromptu gatherings at someone’s shop. He was a featured demonstrator at many woodturning clubs here in Texas.

Long time Texas woodturner and demonstrator, Larry Roberts of Dallas, summed it up best: “A master is gone, but he left a host of influences.”
